From the magical wizarding world of Hogwarts to Orwell’s chilling world of non-stop surveillance and lack of privacy known as 1984, the thrilling adventures of mere words written on paper never cease to disappoint no matter what the situation. Thousands of people crave to find the time to sit down with a book they’ve had on their shelves for what seems like forever but never seem to get around to it as the rush of the ticking life speeds by. So if this individual is you, then this is your time. Read that book. Finish that series. Achieve that satisfaction of escaping this world and diving into another.

Books and literature is a great way to cope during difficult circumstances, and it seems I’m not the only one with the same thought. A new survey has revealed that people in the UK have almost doubled the amount of time they spend reading books since lockdown began, 52% of the readers said they were reading more because they had more spare time, 51% said it was because they wanted to stay entertained, and 35% felt books were providing “an escape from the crisis”. But hey, no pressure, if physically reading is not your thing then there’s great platforms and apps such as Libby and Audible who offer a wide range of digital along with audiobooks. Aniqa Rahman, another fellow bookworm like me, claims “reading is an outlet from this daunting reality and a step into what little freedom is achievable during these time”. So don’t fret over the number of pages and pick up that book, who knows. It might just become your best read or a start of many more.
