SuperM ‘The Avengers of Kpop’ –Leena Jenson On the 28th of February 2020 SuperM also branded as ‘The Avengers of Kpop’ performed in London at the O2, where almost all the seats were packed with adoring fans.

But what is SuperM?

They are a super group that combines members from some three of the biggest kpop boy groups in Korea under SM Entertainment. The members are: Taemin from Shinne, Baekyung and Kai from EXO, Lucas, Mark, Taeyong and Ten from NCT. And although they are a kpop group who sings in both Korean and English the members are very diverse. Lucas is half Thai and Half Hong Kong Chinese, Ten is Thai, Mark is of Korean origin but grew up in Canada, Kai is half Chinese and Half Korea and lastly Taeyong, Baekhyung and Taemin are all from South Korea.

SuperM debuted in early October 2019 and was met with overwhelming support from fans due to the already existing fan base of the separate groups combined with the catchiness of ‘Jopping’ (their first song .) I immediately fell in love with these boys for their vocals, dancing abilities and visuals. When I saw their London performance I was amazed by their stage presence and vocals, the choreography was fantastical but executed perfectly.

SM Entertainment has done something amazing by bringing certain members from three of their boy groups together, as they not only brought their different and unique styles together but they also brought different fandoms together; witnessing that first hand was amazing, brilliant and honestly touching, to see the support and love for these talented artists/idols. So why are they called ‘The Avengers of Kpop?’ Firstly it is a super group combined with members from different groups. Creating a unity of fandom.

Secondly each member is extremely talented and have unquie points which compliment each other, an example being Taemin’s beautifully delicate vocals harmonsing with Baekhyun’s raw and deep voice. This created more or less magic on stage and in the studio. The uniqueness of each group has manufactured a super group.

Thirdly it is suspected that this group was engineered to compete with fellow kpop group BTS. Which is heavily implied with the marketing leading up to their debut, the collaboration with American music labels as well as the over advertisement in America in comparison to Asia and Europe. The boys work extremely hard and give it their all on stage, during their performance at the O2 they met with technical difficulties while singing ‘I can’t stand the rain’ the intro for the concert and so performed it twice as they felt bad and wanted everyone to enjoy it more. Which just illustrates how dedicated they are.

I can’t believe the concert is over as well as the tour, but the avengers need their rest before they continue their conquest/ navigation into the western music market.
