This coronavirus pandemic has hit the hospitality industry the hardest, in particular theatres. Thousands of theatres around the world have been shut for over seven months, and certain theatres have closed  permanently as can no longer run due to the huge amount of money lost, and can’t keep their workers and staff any longer. By the end of the year 70% of theatres in London are expected to close permanently if they receive no financial help from the Government.

This statistic is not only a devastating amount of theatres which have been around for thousands of year being lost but thousands of jobs will be lost with these theatres as well. The Government was encouraging actors, dancers and other performers and workers who work in this industry to ‘re-train’ stating their job will no longer exist and they won’t be able to continue their dream career, as a result of this pandemic. This is a horrific statement and would mean all these thousands of workers who spent their whole lives training to be in this industry being told to give up and that they can no longer do their job.

For thousands of years people have been going to the theatre to enjoy live performances of musicals and plays we love. This may become a thing of the past if the Government don’t provide financial support for these much loved theatres. Thousands of grants have already been offered to theatres in England however this is not enough. More and more theatres are hanging on in the balance and are suffering to pay their staff and workers every week. We need to help these theatres and workers otherwise theatres and live performances will be a thing of the past and these workers and professionals will no longer be able to do the job they love, and as a result may become unemployed for a significant amount of time.

The hospitality industry was hit the hardest and was condemned as non-essential during the pandemic. When parts of the hospitality industry began to re-open they were getting significantly less costumers due to the pandemic meaning they made very little profit. As a result, some of the hospitality industry closed permenantly or has closed for the time being for example cineworld. This is devastating especially as they had not only lost so much money, let so many staff go but also lost all the money they spent trying their hardest to make their place covid-secure. For theatres and other parts of the hospitality industry the next few months will be critical for so many of these industries survival. The Government need to think of a plan to keep this crucial industry alive.
