This week London became the most recent city to endure the effects of ‘The Beast From the East’, enduring freezing temperatures and heavy snowfall. Although this may have been a welcome surprise to some, the UK Met Office issued a yellow warning for London as well as a red warning in Scotland; as such, the likelihood of travel delays on roads, railways and air travel has increased dramatically. Also, power cuts may occur as well as issues regarding mobile network connection.
As well as all this, a number of schools are also struggling to deal with the snow and bitter cold, and have decided in the best interest of the students, to close their doors for the day. Furthermore, the Met Office was warned that this could be the coldest week across the UK since 1991, so this may not be the final day of school closures.
However, it doesn’t seem like this most recent spell of snow is going away any time soon, as Met Office predicts snow to be falling from 7 a.m. until 2 p.m. in London. This could result in further traffic and travel delays as well as possible school closures over the next couple of days.
Due to all these poor weather conditions it is imperative that Londoners continually remain safe, especially when commuting, particularly on the roads. Sadiq Khan tweeted earlier today, ‘With snowfall overnight and freezing temperatures forecast in London again today, @TfL are working around the clock to keep our capital moving. Remember to allow extra time for your journey and plan ahead - check @tfltravelalerts before travelling.’
Hopefully, soon we will be able to emerge on the other side of this trialling and difficult weather, and having endured the minimal amount of damage possible.
