Lata Mangeshkar, born in September 1929, and sadly passed away this year on the 6th of February, had lived through many historical life events including the 1947 India/Pakistan partition. She recorded what is thought to be up to 25000 songs, including 5000 songs in Bollywood movies in over 25 regional languages.

Lata was born to parents Deenanath and Shudhamati, this was Deenanath's second marriage as his first one to Shudhamati's younger sister resulted in her and a baby infant daughter's death during infancy. Lata was followed by her 4 younger siblings, Meena, Asha, Usha, and Hridaynath, all of which now sing and record music.

As she studied music she began entering the Bollywood scene, and soon became known as the 'Nightingale of Indian cinema' known for her sweet and melodious voice that sang in the difficult fourth-octave. She famously was known to bring President Nehru to tears after her performance in the Sino-Indian war. She supposedly didn't get married presumably to focus on continuing her singing career. Throughout her career she was awarded countless awards but most notably was in 2001 she was awarded the Bharat Ratna, the highest Indian civilian honor.

Sadly she passed away on the 6th of Feb 2022, after catching Covid 19 and suffering from Pneumonia and having multiple organ dysfunctional syndrome. The Government of India announced a two-day mourning period and announced that there would be a national funeral, where many Bollywood celebrities came to say their prayers and show respect.

Lata's career and her songs are ever embedded into the culture of Bollywood films and music and through her songs, her soul and spirit will live on...
