Bexley Council has announced additional collection points this weekend as it seeks to clear a backlog of waste caused by the Serco strike.

Uncollected bins have piled up across the borough since July 12, after around 140 refuse workers walked out over pay and victimisation complaints.

Serco and Unite finally agreed terms earlier this week, following talks mediated by ACAS which went on long into the night.

A spokesperson for the Bexley Council said: “Now the strike is suspended our priority is to get your services restored in time for the new contractor starting in October.

“We know that you’ll appreciate there is a backlog of waste to collect.

“We will continue to operate the additional drop off facilities for the time being.

“Residents should be aware that the volume of waste to catch up on may mean that your bin isn’t collected on the usual day.”

This weekend (Saturday August 28) Bexley residents will be able to take waste that would normally be collected in their white and blue-lidded bins to two local car parks.

Paper, cardboard, plastic, glass, cans and cartons will be collected from 8.30am to 1pm at Westwood Lane, DA16 3QS, and Nuxley Road car park, DA17 5LJ.

There will be collection vehicles at each location and staff will be available.

Countrystyle Recycling have been chosen as the borough's new waste and recycling contractor after a "detailed procurement exercise," taking over from outsourcing giants Serco in October this year.

The strike suspension requires some final actions which are expected to occur before September 2 to ensure an official end.
