A former Bexley resident is calling for road changes to be made after she received the same driving fine as two of her friends within a 24-hour period.

Susan Smith, 62, was driving on the A207 near the Danson Lane junction when approaching Welling High Street when she found herself “straddling” a yellow box on the road.

She said she had “pulled forward and the traffic stopped abruptly” - resulting in her receiving a yellow box junction penalty fine through the post.

However, when Susan told two “unconnected” friends about her fine – they told her they had both received fines for the same thing on the same day.

Susan told the News Shopper: “What are the chances that two other people have also had this within a 24- hour period.

“I don’t want the money back because I’ve paid it now but I just wonder how many other people are being caught at this difficult junction.

“I’m well aware of the yellow box rule but there’s clearly something fundamentally wrong there as you can’t help but get stuck in the box.”

Susan said she had seen the traffic pulling forward, had judged it as clear and then the traffic started slowing down.

She added that her friend got caught after a car unexpectedly pulled out from Danson Lane – leaving him completely blocked in the box and unable to reverse back.

Susan explained: “Maybe a roundabout should be put there or at least the box should be taken out.

“I don’t believe it’s fair to be penalising people for it and I’d like it investigated.

“I’ve asked Bexley Council for some data but I haven’t heard back.

“There’s a difference if someone deliberately pulls into the box to block the traffic – but if two other people have been caught within such a short space of time it definitely rings alarm bells.”

The News Shopper has approached Bexley Council for comment.

As Susan paid her fine within 10 days, it was reduced to £65 – but she wants a local hospice to have the money rather than the council.

She added: “I’m suggesting that Bexley Council gives a local hospice my money as so many people have struggled during the pandemic and it’s immoral for the council to have the money.

“I’m so cross and I want it to go to a good cause.”
