Sunday the 11th March marked the annual celebration of Mother's day with many showing their appreciation and love towards their mothers or motherly figures, through gifts and special treatment.

Amy, a mother of three children, thinks that celebration has detrimental effects, saying that “Although the cause behind mother's day is innocent and tries to focus society on the plights and hardships a mother faces by dedicating a day towards caring for a mother- it also unknowingly has created negative subconscious views on the topic. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate that my children have laboured so hard every mother's day to make me feel special and loved- but I don’t want this tradition to implement a toxic mindset to them. I am also aware of the fact that no one has intentionally tried to harbour such views but I want to speak about my personal opinion on mother's day.”

She followed her views by explaining her statement,” I feel that everyday should be mother's day, as overused and cheesy as that line is. It is said so often for a reason. To me, mother's day gives me an impression that it justifies someone treating their parents poorly on a daily basis but only being kind and caring on the one popularised day. Shouldn’t we be telling our children that they should treat their parents with love and good manners regularly, instead of that one day that society has deemed we should gift our mothers? I would rather my children be amicable to me every day and skipping mother's day traditions in contrast to being harsh and then deciding that for one day they should show how much they care.”

Her purpose of conveying her view was to “Help the world change, step by step and cause a positive effect on society.
