Music is a huge part of most people’s life. Whether its because its simply readily available at your fingertips, or you just love the comfort of it, Its very important to many people. Music can come in many genres, each one having a different beat, pulse or rhythm to it. Some may be better for running and some better for studying. But can music be a distraction?

Research has shown that tasks that involve concentration and memory (Needed for revising) were better performed in a silent atmosphere. However, if there is a light background noise, such as sneezing or the traffic, then you are better off listening to music. Yet, this music should be light, not loud as that will be a distraction.  In general, music that is classical is seen to be the best, but it is important to keep in mind that these results are only tested in a small scale of perhaps 1,000 people. Therefore, the results aren’t of large accuracy.

However, many other factors can affect performance, such as whether you are an introvert or an extrovert. When listening to music, a chemical reaction takes place inside your body. Dopamine, a neurotransmitter responsible for relaxation and pleasurable feelings, is released. This makes you feel like you are relaxed, and you feel a sense of pleasure. It is this feeling that can reduce your stress levels, which many of us have.

To conclude, listening to music is very good for you, however if you are going to listen to it, make sure that it isn’t very loud and is just a light, calm, relaxing song.
