Another year is another filled with despair, as the world keeps surprising us with unbelievable news stories, but here's one you've surely not heard about - the 3 commercial aviation airplane disasters which have so far occured in 2021.

January 9th - Sriwijaya Air Flight 182

The Boeing 737-500 was on a domestic flight from Jakarta to Pontianak, Indonesia, the disaster killing all 62 passengers and crew on board. The plane nose dived into the Java sea only a few minutes after take off plummeting over 10,000 feet in less than a minute. Though the investigation is still ongoing, since the preliminary crash investigation based on information from the data recorder, it's believed that the 26-year-old jet had an imbalance in it's engine thrust contributing to the aircraft's rolling before it nosedived. However, usually pilots are able to control this. Fortunately in late March the crucial memory recorder from the cockpit voice recorder was found, which will hopefully shed light on what occured in the cockpit, minutes before the deadly disaster.

February 20th - United Airlines Flight 328

The Boeing 777-200 was on a flight from Denver, Colorado to Honolulu, Hawaii. Shortly, after take off, the right hand engine failed causing it to go up in flames and give out lots of smoke. Luckily, the plane was able to return safely back to Denver International Airport 20 minutes after the engine failure, as the debris fell over Broomfield, Colorado. Thankfully, no injuries or fatalities were caused by the disaster. The disaster was caused by broken blades in the fan, caused by one completely falling off, it is thought to be metal fatigue to have caused this but the investigation is ongoing.

March 2nd - South Sudan Supreme Airlines, Let L-410 Turbolet

The airplane had a fake registration of HK-4274, due to it being a new airplane that had not been re-registered, was a domestic flight from Pieri to Yuai, South Sudan, killing all 8 passengers and 2 crew members. The South Sudan Civil Aviation Authority n that 10 minutes after take off, the flight suffered from engine failure, due to this they tried to land but the other engine failed in the process causing the airplane to lose speed and crash.

Aviation disasters have always worried people when flying, yet most are unknown. However, with aviation technology improving, there are less aviation disasters occurring each year.
