A holy time is upon the Muslim community, hundreds of millions of Muslims worldwides partaking in the month of Ramadan. Ramadan is a special time for muslims being able to deeply connect to their religion and become closer to God by demonstrating their devoutness, especially in the ever-changing western world. It's not only a display of piety but a month of togetherness, determination and gratitude. The coronavirus pandemic has made Ramadan all the more important as we reflect back on our lost loved ones and thank God for protecting us from harm. A time in which we can change our ways, our habits and above all, our devotion to God.

During the pandemic, specifically the first lockdown, Muslim families in the UK were able to help and encourage eachother to push through the long difficult days, breaking their fast at the end of the day with a hearty meal. In the first lockdown, both children and parents were cooped up at home forcing us to realise the life we take for granted. This triggered a major change to the way we live, putting into perspective the privileges many of us had pre-lockdown. It was particularly difficult being unable to celebrate Eid with enjoyable and lively parties and a trip to the bustling mosque. We had to adapt to the situation and make the most of the time many of us had with the members of our household.

With Covid still lurking around, we have approached Ramadan number 2 which has been difficult for many of us having lost many relatives and friends during the period between last year and this year. Schools and work have returned to our lives which has filled our society with mixed emotions. Some Muslims find being occupied by something outside of the house makes you feel less affected by fasting, whilst others feel that being around only your household and fasting collectively is easier.

As Eid Al-Fitr is nearing, Muslims are pushing through the final weeks of Ramadan with determination and strength, hoping to be able to celebrate this religious occasion with family and friends outdoors. We look into the future praying that the next Eids follow suit as the covid restrictions ease and life returns to normal.
