Even though lockdown should soon be coming to an end, we still have a little way to go, and in this time we need to continue to stay fit and healthy, and keep our bodies active, especially since we’re spending most of the day sitting down at our desks, and the only time we move about is when we go up or down the stairs, or maybe a walk from the sofa to the kitchen; so, how can you stay healthy during lockdown?

I interviewed a fifteen-year-old girl who, like everyone else, has been in lockdown since Christmas, but has maintained an efficient and healthy way to exercise. I asked her what kind of exercise she has been doing, and she responded ‘At the beginning of lockdown, I went on YouTube and found lots of online workout videos such as Chloe Ting that were really useful. They have certain videos depending on what you want to strengthen, for example there is one for strengthening your arms, another for your core and so on. This makes it a bit more interesting and makes sure that you are exercising your whole body’.

I found this interesting, as it means that anyone else out there who doesn’t know what exercises to do or where to start, a simple YouTube video can be very effective. I also asked her if she had been outside to do any exercise and she responded ‘Every now and then I will go on a run around my town, just to get a bit of fresh air. I also go on walks with a friend (sticking to the covid-19 guidelines), as this makes the walk a bit more entertaining, and I am able to cath up with my friend whilst also doing healthy exercise’.

I was also curious to find out what has been the most strenuous piece of exercise she has done, and she impressed me with telling me that she walked 26.2 miles in one day, the same distance as a marathon. ‘I completed it with a friend, and it was a very difficult challenge! We started at around half past eight in the morning and finished at around five thirty the next day. I got a lot of blisters, and the next day I could barely walk, but the whole experience was a lot of fun and a great achievement!’

In conclusion, even though it may feel as though lockdown is a good excuse to not do any exercise, it is important that we stay motivated, by finding a way to make exercise fun, and keep our bodies fit and healthy, and even though you don’t have to walk a marathon to do this, there are much simpler ways!
