On Friday 11th December 2020 Save the Children’s Christmas Jumper Day is going to take place with many across the UK. Although this is a chance to see many dressed in colourful clothing, the main idea is to raise as much money as possible for those in need. This is a chance for many schools to take part in a charity event where pupils can pay one pound in order to wear a Christmas jumper to school. However, it is not just schools, many youth groups, workplaces and even homes have signed up paying two pounds. Over 3,500,000 have signed up and are already taking part.

Although some may be working from home or attending online classes, there is still an opportunity via ZOOM. Save the Children encourages you to sign up and ‘tell EVERYONE you know.’ The money that is raised is donated to less fortunate families in the world suffering from poverty especially due to problems with wages because of the current pandemic.

Vaccines and other medicines are also supported by the cause. Many celebrities have also shown interest in this event since the first event in 2012 and have been branded with the slogan ‘make the world better with a sweater.’ So far 4 million pounds has been raised with this year’s event still to come. The idea isn’t just to wear a Christmas jumper; there are many other festive activities that can be found on savethechildren.org.

In order to reduce plastic waste from regular sales, the website urges people to buy from vintage shops. Save the Children has previously used a recyclable bag – that can be requested – to donate old jumpers that can then be sold in Save the Children charity shops throughout the UK.

The charity aids children in over 100 countries including the UK by helping them with staying safe, healthy and learning. Save the children’s goal is that by 2030, ‘no child will die from preventable causes before their fifth birthday, all children learn from a quality basic education, and violence against children is no longer tolerated.’ Adding on to this, the charity tries to tackle big problems and believes ‘every one of them has something special to bring to the world.’
