After a long 6 months of intense lockdown, we have been given a little more freedom from September with schools reopening and small business still running.  For many of us this was a great sign as we were able to do more things but one issue that arose out of this was the increase in burglaries. In all areas, there has been an increase in theft as more people become desperate for anything available.

A particular area that has been affected by mass robbery is Edgware (North London) where several houses have been broken into. A recent interview with a girl (who has chosen to remain anonymous) from Edgware, whose street has been subject to burglaries, explains how this situation has gotten severely out of hand.

She explained her feelings about this situation and how this has impacted her lifestyle.

‘My street has been burgled a few times in the last 2-3 years but not as much as it has now’ she says. ‘There was a recent one across my house where the home had been empty and some people had come and taken a lot of their things’. She explains how this has affected her and her family. ‘My family are trying to stay home as much as possible now as there seems to be a regular pattern of the thieves coming when the houses are empty. I’m quite worried about this situation as the idea of being robbed seems so daunting but all we can do now is hope things will get better’.

These issues are occurring all over the country and we need to be stay as safe as possible during these difficult times. Fortunately, many of the thefts are not physically harmful and although the new lockdown measures may help reverse this issue, it is key that we remember our personal safety is the most important factor and comes before anything else.
