Bonfire night might have been on the 5th of November but it seems that not everyone got the memo. On Thursday the 12th of November an unidentified group set off fireworks into a crowd of Graveney sixth formers after school. The crowd was sent into a frenzy and the teachers into a fury.

The week prior to this, there had been random occurrences of one or two fireworks being ignited around the area. I spoke to internal student Adjoa Nuama, who said this had “happened before” she further commented “I think they obviously plan it… probably childish people, bored have nothing better to do, get fireworks from who knows where, probably illegally.” Many students and teachers speculate that the people behind this heinous act are students from another school, who possibly have a vendetta against the school or are simply bored and irresponsible.

The fireworks that had been let off into the herd of sixth formers had many running for their lives with the fear of being shot by one of the innumerable fireworks that had exploded into the crowd. There had been several videos of the event circling on social media, where countless screams were heard and people scrambling to escape the danger. A sixth former who had been a witness to this had said “I was very worried I was going to get hit by a firework”, this feeling was prevalent amongst majority of the sixth form and had resulted in a number of teachers standing around the school vigilant for any further possible fireworks being brought onto the school grounds.

Despite fireworks being used for entertainment purposes the dangers of them can be alarming, the NHS reported that in the past five years over 1,000 hospital admissions had been firework related. Firework injuries can range from minor burns to amputations, it is urged that people take precaution with fireworks and ensure that it is only sold and used to those over 18.
