Throughout this week, Christmas lights around Hertfordshire have been switched on, one by one. Borehamwood for example, illuminated its highstreets on 29th November 2020. Although the usual bustling crowds were not able to fill the streets this year, it was still a lovely event that many looked forward to. The Elstree and Borehamwood Council have bought new Christmas decorations in the last few years, in order to provide a refreshing atmosphere during the Holidays. Locals were not disappointed. Citizens of Radlett were also delighted to see the beautiful display that lit up the town centre this weekend.

We can all agree that 2020 has been a strange year and although Christmas may be slightly different this time around, many residents of Hertfordshire have been comforted by the sense of normalcy the Christmas lights have brought. The lights have been turning on every year since the 1970’s in most of Hertfordshire's towns, showing their significance in marking the beginning of the festivities. Borehamwood local Michelle, explained how to her the lights signified, ‘the joy and merriment Christmas brings’ but especially this year, they served as a reminder of the ‘warmth winter can often provide, despite the shortened days.’ Hopefully the turning on of the lights, can be a symbol of a more positive month and ending to the year.

With the Holidays less than a month away, the Christmas lights are not the only festivities residents of Hertfordshire can look forward to this year. Hitchin will still be holding their annual Christmas Market albeit it has been pushed back due to the second lock down. People will still be able to stroll around Market Place and enjoy the offerings of the German-inspired stalls. Alternatively, many Hertfordshire towns are moving their much-loved annual events to the virtual world. Potters Bar, are holding a much-anticipated online Christmas Market, where people will be able to set up their own stalls for only £5. Additionally, St Albans’ ‘Christmas Cracker Street Festival’, will be entirely online, with events starting as early as 27th November. Singers such as Ricky Lopez and Abbie Gathard will be performing popular Christmas classics, which will be sure to liven up your day. December is looking better already!
