Orpington Tesco has pledged to help mental health charities around the local area. Large retail stores around the UK have such community projects in order to give back to their community and provide help to good causes.

The charities that have been chosen have projects promoting awareness of mental health conditions and providing mindfulness initiatives.

This money had been raised through the 5p charge on plastic bags which was enforced by the government to tackle plastic pollution. The money raised from these plastic bag purchases go to a selection of local charities chosen by customers. A Tesco employee called this a ‘grassroots project which would help people across Orpington’.

The benefits of this donations will have huge positive impacts for mental health in the community. As one charity volunteer who volunteers for a mental health charity said,

‘This donation will have amazing impacts for Orpington and its surrounding areas. It will not only allow us to continue our outreach into schools, but also allow us to start looking at adult mental health which has been largely ignored in the past due to underfunding. To think that something as small as 5p plastic carrier bags can have such a large profound effect is bewildering.’

Orpington Tesco’s previous such donations involve providing much-needed donations to underfunded local hospices and providing food to neighbourhood food banks. These schemes have benefited the local area by providing support to underprivileged people.

Hopefully, this donation to mental health has a long-lasting and substantial effect in improving lives around Orpington.
