Schools need to take up the responsibility of teaching entrepreneurship as a viable career option and not as a last resort. The stigma associated with entrepreneurship and for that matter, any risk-taking venture needs to be removed and it starts with schools. Just the other day when talking with my friends there was a consensus that any career that involves risk is not worth pursuing and to quote him directly, “If I fail at everything else I will start my own business.”

To remove this stigma we need to educate ourselves in the risks and rewards of entrepreneurship and although it isn’t for everyone it can lay the foundation for a new generation of aspiring hopefuls. Through my 10 years of formal education I have never come across anyone who advised or even defended becoming a business owner. Conversely getting a secure job in almost any field is praised to no end. This needs to be stopped.

It is the businesses which create employment and boost the economy not the government. This is due to a simple law of economics. The businesses have reason to be innovative there incentive is to create money by either cheaply or more effectively selling products or services. If we encourage young people to take risks and set up businesses we could see unprecedented economic growth. Never has this been more important than now. We are currently heading in a financial recession due to Covid-19 and although No.11 is trying to prevent job losses and a shrinking economy ultimately it is up to us to uplift this country. After the vaccine it will be up to business owners to stabilize the economy not the government. For long term economic growth we need to promote entrepreneurship and it starts with our schools.
