It comes as no surprise that Tik Tok has become one of the most popular apps to touch our screens. The viral video sharing app, now known to worth a staggering $75billion, is used by teens, parents and even some animals have gained popularity on the app. Walking through my college or just walking down the road it has become normal to see people doing a dance from Tik Tok or singing a popular song which has gained its fame from the app.

But what makes the app so addictive? and is there an obsession?

There are 3.7million active users in the UK, who are on the app for at least 41 minutes a day, one of those users being 16-year-old Ashanti from south east London.

Why do you like tik tok so much?

Because it is so interesting, there are so many different things to watch. I like to watch dances, recipe videos and makeup and hair tutorials. It is a great way to pass time.

Does tik tok ever interfere with any of your daily activities?

yes, all the time, there have been many times where I haven’t completed homework the because I have spent my time watching tik tok videos or I haven’t gotten enough sleep because I have been up all night on the app.

Do you think that you are obsessed with tik tok?

Yes, I have even tried to limit how long I spend on the app. But it never works. I even tried to delete the app altogether but that did not work as I redownloaded it in the space of an hour. It is weird though because I am not like this about Instagram or snapchat. There is just something about tik tok I guess.

Since lockdown, more and more students have joined the app to help ease their boredom and with the possibility of second lockdown approaching, who knows how many more people will join the app and how it will affect their daily lives.
