As the Premier League season advances, the race for the title intensifies with the main contenders for the league becoming more prevalent.

After 5 game weeks of the 2020-21 premier league season,  there have already been countless unexpected results and controversial VAR decisions making it all the more difficult to put your finger on who the clear contenders for the title are. Being a season under COVID situations, it has turned out to be a classic, jam packed with turbulent rivalaries and unpredictable standings, managing to entertain the footballing community all across the world even with the restrictions imposed on fans. Whilst there is still a very long rest of the season to go, it is becoming more and more evident which teams are looking strong to compete for the title.

Here are the top 3 title contenders:

Liverpool: Having suffered the huge loss of Virgil Van Dijk for what looks like the rest of the season from the highly controversial high challenge committed by Everton keeper Jordan Pickford on Saturdays Merseyside derby 2-2 draw, Liverpool’s title seems to be slowly seeping out of their hands. Having already lost 7-2 to Aston Villa in game week 4 with Van Dijk, who knows what will happen when they face teams like Manchester City whilst he is recovering from his knee injury. Van Dijk was seen commenting on Twitter “I’m now fully focused on my recovery and will do everything I can to be back as quickly as possible.” The Reds lie in third place on a respectable 10 points after the Merseyside thriller, sitting three points behind the confident Toffees.

Everton: With the Toffees last major honour being the FA cup win in 1995, they are looking to regain the dominance they so brilliantly once showcased back in the eighties. Having assigned Carlo Ancelotti, a very well known manager in the footballing world, the club managed to make three great signings, the biggest being the Colombian playmaker James Rodriguez. With James Rodriguez in CAM plucking the strings and Dominic Calvert Lewin in ST scoring the goals at a menacing pace, the side looks thoroughly unstoppable. Carlo Ancelotti commented on Liverpool (previous title winners of the 2019-20 season) in the Merseyside derby by saying “I think it could be a target for us, to be able to reach not the same level but to compete against them like we competed, like an old Merseyside derby.” Having won 4 games and drawn 1, the toffees sit in 1st place with a threatening 13 points next to their name.

Man City: Having been the most dominant club in English football in the last few years, the 2019-20 season shocked many across the footballing community. However, City is looking to reclaim its title and it couldn’t have gotten any better from a city fans perspective with the news that Van Dijk (Liverpool defender) will be sitting out for the rest of the season due to a knee injury. With Pep Guardiola acquiring Nathan Aké, Ruben Dias and Ferran Torres over the summer the clubs squad depth has increased even more. With city beating Wolves 3-1 in the first week and beating Arsenal 1-0 in the fourth week, Man City look confident going into battle with a very surprisingly strong West Ham team. Having won 2 games, drawn 1 and lost 1 with a game in hand sitting in 10th place on 7 points, City are a team you should always pay attention to - especially on the topic of title contenders.

As the season progresses, only time can tell who will really be crowned the premier league 2020-21 title winners. Who knows? A team outside of these three could easily go on a streak of good performances and snag the title, but throughout the season it is inevitably going to become more and more obvious who will contend for the title.

Who do you think will get top 3?
