During this hard time, it gets harder to appreciate those who are putting their lives at risk to maintain the regular function of our lives, creating some sort of normality.

Key workers are people who are continuing to work during the quarantine period in order to continue the process of allowing our needs to be met. Here is an interview with two keyworkers explaining the hardships as well as the satisfaction they are faced with on a daily basis.

Key worker 1:

What is your job role?

My job role is a sales assistant at a superstore.

Are you being provided with the necessary equipment?

Yes. They are taking precautions for all the workers in the store. For example, we get face mask and are able to have access to hand sanitizer throughout the day.

What is the best part of your day?

The morning shifts are the best because we are able to help the NHS workers and the older people. It makes me feel happy because I am able to help in any way I can.

Are you being faced with any challenges?

I find it hard to communicate to customers about bulk buying.

How do you find working under pressure?

Throughout the day, it is normally safe for us workers but it’s difficult making sure everyone is safe and that makes it harder for me to work.

How would you describe a day in your life?

Most days I do morning shifts. My day consists of eight hour shifts and throughout the day I am proving for customers. We help in any way we can. We help with shopping, help with tills and also stock up early for those who are buying when we first open.

Key worker 2:

What is your job role?

I’m a nurse.

Are you being provided with the necessary equipment?

Yes, but we are not switching equipment as much as we should due to shortages as you must be aware about.

What is the best part of your day?

When it does happen, the best part of my day is watching someone recover. It makes me feel better knowing that we are making progress slowly.

Are you being faced with any challenges?

I find it emotionally draining not seeing someone recover. Most people don’t know this but it’s hard wearing masks and protective gear all day.

How do you find working under pressure?

As a nurse, its necessary for us to adapt to the situation. So, I feel I am coping and managing as well as I possibly can.

How would you describe a day in your life?

I wake up and go to work and my day is proving my assistance to doctors and helping patients. It is a long day that ends as late as nine on some days. Leaving early is rare, but I knew when I chose to do this, that I would have to sacrifice these normal things like getting to go home early.

We are appreciating these people for a reason and it is necessary we pay respects to those who are working for our well-being. From supermarket workers to nurses, each person plays a big role during this pandemic. Stay safe for yourself and others.
