Pandemic Catastrophe!

The past few months – has been an abrupt way for us as a nation and as people to start the new year of 2020. This year brought the fear of the start of World War 3 and now with the apprehensive pandemic. COVID-19. This virus startled the world as it is a calamity that we have been thrown in without any awareness or way to deal with it. The last pandemic that occurred was the Spanish flu – which affected the lives of millions. Now we are seemingly reliving the same fate. This pandemic has caused a stop in our daily activities and social gatherings which by doing so has created a great downfall for us. The thoughts of not being able to see loved ones and family members are heavy on my heart and the mere enjoyments of shopping and going out to eat just seems as myths. These life luxuries that we seem to take for granted have now been stripped away from us. However, this pandemic has caused us to act like animals. Fierce. Abrupt. The constant charging of people rushing to shopping centres and buying unnecessary amounts of toilet paper and pasta in uncalled for. Panic buying leads to nothing. Panic buying does not save a person from a virus. It just causes others pain – due to being unable to buy necessities that are essential for everyone during these times. During these horrible times that we are living, we should not be reckless and buy for the selfishness of our own needs – we should be considerate of everyone, as it is everyone who is experiencing the same pandemic and the same uncalled for circumstances as the next person. Panic buying is ruthless, disgusting and animalistic. We should be humane, considerate and selfless. These aren’t the times to be selfish but the times to be caring and loving to everyone.

This catastrophe should widen our eyes to the mere fact that we are one of the largest economic countries. Yet we have been put in a situation that makes us vulnerable and weak. We are facing lockdown, limited food, no social life. How do you think the rest of the world feels when it is the drastic circumstances that they have to live every day? The poorest of countries in Africa, Palestine, Kashmir, Uyghur Muslims? How did we serve them? Look out for them? Now here we are crying about our circumstances… do we have any right? When it was us who was living comfortably and didn’t bat an eyelid to all those children suffering and starving in silence.

This is our time for as humanity to face this together and recognise the countless atrocities that take place on a daily basis in Low-Income countries around the world. This should be our wake-up call to not be so selfish with our own needs but look at the necessity of all the families in Syria and Burma and everywhere else who are dying for the same comfort and freedom like us. Awareness needs to be spread, and change needs to occur.
