As a result of the coronavirus situation, Virginia, a mother of 2, and Joseph, her 12-year-old, have been working from home. I asked them about their experiences.

Virginia – Mother of 2

How long have you been working from home?

10 days

So how are you accessing your work?

A remote server – I can access all my files and software from my work computer at home.

Are you in contact with your colleagues, if so how?

Yes, all the time! via Microsoft Teams, conference calling for group meetings, email and WhatsApp for individual contact. We’re even having weekly virtual pub quizzes.

What does a typical day look like for you?

I get dressed as usual and I sit at the kitchen table to work. I normally work 9-5 but I’m doing 8.30-4.30 as I haven’t got the commute.

What are the pros and cons you’ve experienced so far?

I enjoy not having to commute but it’s the time in the day when I read my book, so I haven’t been doing that. I have more time at home to sort things out, but it’s a lot less sociable.

Joseph – 12-year-old boy

How long have you been working from home?

1 week since school’s officially closed but we were off for 9 days before as well.

So how are you accessing your work?

ShowMyHomework and Google Classrooms.

Do you have any interaction with your teachers?

Yes, I do. I can ask questions if I’m confused, and I sometimes receive praise for work that I’ve submitted.

What does a typical day look like for you?

I don’t bother getting dressed but I do get out of bed and work at the desk in my room.

What are the pros and cons you’ve experienced so far?

I like not having to go out every day but I am getting way more work than usual and I can’t see my friends.
