The film 1917 was released on the 10th January 2020 in the UK, it was directed by Sam Mendes who also directed Skyfall, Spectre and American beauty .
1917 is about the journey of two soldiers- Lance Corporal Schofield and Lance Corporal Blake as they receive near to impossible orders to cross German territory and deliver a message to call off a sabotaged attack in which 1600 allies could die.
Each scene was filmed in one shot to show something of a realistic 3rd person view and as if it was happening in real time. The director wanted it to seem more like a “ticking clock thriller” rather than a war film.
There was a few big names in the movie but the director didn’t cast the actors on how famous they were but who best fit the role. Benedict Cumberbatch (an A list celebrity) is in the movie but does not hold a main role in the film, this is because Sam Mendes wanted relatively unknown actors, George Mackay and Dean-Charles Chapman, so that it could give the viewers the feeling that the 2 young men were 2 of 2 million and nothing that would particularly stand out.
World War I is perhaps unequalled in its horrific brutality. 1917 takes us into that horror and doesn’t let us out of it for two hours. - Paul Asay
About 15 minutes in to this movie, it dawns on you that this is something uniquely brilliant. - Tara McNamara
