Having just been released in the UK on 26 December 2019, there is nothing more perfect to end the decade than with Greta Gerwig’s film adaptation of the widely loved novel ‘Little Women’ originally written by Louisa May Alcott.
This movie is bound to warm your heart and make you relive the moments of reading and falling in love with the novel as a child. It is filled with laughter and tears, as well as bringing the viewer on the amazing rollercoaster of getting to know the sisters to a level in which you feel like you are part of the family.
Additionally, the cast is extremely well chosen, with the likes of the extremely charming Timothee Chalamet as ‘Laurie’, the actress everyone grew up with, Emma Watson as ‘Meg’, Soairse Ronan as the fierce and independent ‘Josephine’ and finally Meryl Streep as ‘Aunt March’. This movie is beautifully acted and Greta Gerwig has stayed true to the feminine gaze of the film while adding a contemporary energy that made the story feel fresh.
To conclude, this film has had a strong message throughout the whole story that sisterhood is the most powerful force and it almost never lets the viewer forget that. Though there are extremely low times in the film, there is always an uplifting energy that the film brings and most importantly, there is never a point where it becomes cheesy. The nature of this beautiful story is that it comes from a place of honesty and an admiration of sisterhood.
