Libraries are a quiet environment with a collection of books, magazines, newspapers and internet access. What may seem like a simple task of keeping the books in an organized manner is a myth for a librarian (especially for a school librarian). At Gumley House School, the library has a variety of resources ranging from reviews, fiction, non-fiction, reference books and internet access. Here are some insights from Sally Richardson, Gumley’s School Librarian, who maintains the biggest school library in the London Borough of Hounslow.

What’s the best thing about being a librarian?

“It is about helping students to find the information and having the joy to provide the assistance and learning support to students. I ensure the LRC (learning resources centre) library awareness lessons are booked for the Year 7s. Gumley has an ex-student who is a published author and is our patron of reading. Kim Curran does author visits and workshops which is very inspirational for the students. And, I place orders for the most recent books published so that students will always have something to excite them once they reach the library. The library is treated like a safe haven to escape into a fantasy world. “

What are the challenges faced being a librarian?

“Being a school librarian is challenging nowadays with budget constraints. There is also added challenge to ensure the library is a safe and quiet environment. “

How long have you worked in the library?

“I have worked for over 25 years. I have gained my experience and degree through studying a 2-year chartership that allows me to work in any library environment. This is the essential librarianship qualification needed”.

What are your thoughts regarding the news of 130 libraries closing in Britain?

“The main reason this is occurring is due to lack of funding. The decline in libraries is also mainly through the revolution of a computerised society filled with efficient devices such as the kindles and the internet. With online shopping, students can now buy their books at affordable prices as opposed to visiting the local library .”

What would happen if they decided to close school library?

“There’s always a place for books. The internet provides us with updated and faster information than a book. However, it is important to note that anyone can upload anything regardless whether if it is fake or real facts on the web. Thus, online information is not always verified to educate students. Books are tailored to meet each and everyone’s needs, an example of this can be seen for sixth formers who participate in EPQ projects tend to find information through verified authors. Their research is supported and extracted from known authors and thus helps their development in their topic grow. It can often be easier to find information from a book than the endless websites online. “

The interview journey came to end with picking up a book to read during my free time to truly escape into a fantasy world.
