This Is Local London:    “We are in a planetary emergency.” These are the words of Professor James Hansen, former Director of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies, and the words that are plastered on the screen of the Extinction Rebellion website. It appears that an ecological crisis is looming – and what better way to inform the public than peaceful, nonviolent civil disobedience? However, it seems that, in some cases, extinction rebellion has proved to be more of a hindrance than a help. An example of such a case was the London Underground protests on Thursday 17th October 2019 – where Stratford, Canning Town and Shadwell tube stations came to a standstill at rush hour, due to protestors standing on top of the trains. This act, that was “strongly condemned” by Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, worked against a form of travel that is a lot better for the environment than many others (for example the cars/taxis that these commuters most likely used instead, due to these protests). So, in effect, triggered more damage to the very thing this cause wants to protect. While this event indeed raised awareness of extinction rebellion and the true danger our society is in, it was done in an unproductive and useless way – leading to a public order ban on extinction rebellion activities in London.
