Council tax is being raised in Waltham Forest borough.

On the 28th of February there was a council meeting at Waltham Forest Town Hall. There was a debate on whether the council tax should be raised.

Councillor Sally Littlejohn who is the Mayor of Waltham Forest was Chairing the meeting. Councillor Clare Coghill is the Leader of Waltham Forest council. She is part of Labour and she did agree that the council tax should be raised because of austerity. Councillor Clare Coghill said, “The borough has lost half a billion pounds of funding”. So, due to the inconsistent funding that they receive they now must rely on the local residents for funding.

However, the conservatives believed that money was not being well spent. They believe that the, money that was given to the council by the government had been miss managed. For an example instead of spending the money on services they spent it on a light show for the opening event for the London borough of culture, instead of dealing with important issues such as knife crime which is frequently happening within Waltham forest. The conservative party were more concerned about spending the money on crime prevention. At the end of the debate there was a final vote and the outcome was that they voted to raise the council tax in Waltham Forest.
