Six the Musical is a hilarious yet thought-provoking work of theatrical wonder that truly embodies the joy of visiting the West End. Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss has taken the lives of the infamous Henry VIII ’s six wives and woven it into a triumph of music, performance and vocals.

Reclaiming their stories, previously belittled by the well-known rhyme, the Queens produce an exciting, concert-like show and still manage to tackle the silencing of women throughout history. Backed by a brilliant all-female band, the cast evoke joy but also educate in equal measure, and the combination is wonderful.

With a cast of just six women playing the eponymous spouses, through 75 awe-inducing minutes, the show unfolds fluently, embarking the audience through the events of each queen’s life and the hardships they endured, providing each individual with bustling life through the phenomenal lyrics and chorography. The audience is to watch sequence of revelations about their secreted identities, with an entertaining ‘competition’ story-line stitching the numbers together.

I was fortunate enough to see the show on February the 24th, and was simply blown away. The moment I took my seat and the band intoned the first few notes, I was unequivocally captivated by the queens and their charismatic demeanours.

Jarneia Richard-Noel, Millie O’Connell, Natalie Paris, Alexia McIntosh, Aimie Atkinson and Maiya Quansah-Breed and the three fantastic understudies, Grace Mouat, Vicki Manser and Courtney Stapleton all execute the roles as the Queens in a remarkable manner.

The set-though simplistic- cleverly embeds vivid, eye catching lighting by Tim Deiling and alluring costumes by Gabriella Slade, to create a quintessential dynamic to this show.

Now nominated for five Olivier awards, I would highly recommend Six for it is such a unique show and ever so fun to watch. Currently at the Arts Theatre, London, tickets are available at https://tickets.sixthemusical.com.
