Almost every school child will have had the experience of trying to search for an information source and not being able to access it as it is blocked. Is this a positive thing or does it make it difficult of students to learn?
When there is content restricted, it means that many useful websites are blocked making it harder to access data. This includes websites, images; anything shopping, gaming or company based. Many of these restrict research and thus prohibit learning. A pupil from Ewell castle school commented, saying “I don’t even use school computers anymore, everything is blocked and it’s too hard to find information for my work.” The lack of data available for students to access can be so limited that even links to information sent by teachers can be blocked while on school computers.
On the other hand, schools and learning supervisors say that limiting content is a good thing. This I because it limits distractions and channels learning, as many students are unable to prevent themselves from being distracted whilst online. A senior member of Ewell castle school said” imagine if there were no restrictions on school devices, it would be chaos! Most students would priories gaming and use non- relevant websites instead of doing work.”
