In the Monoux Pride event we learnt a range of different groups of people and how difficult it is for them and how they manage having a different lifestyle compared to others around them. During the event we spoke to Sarah who organised this event in the College, she explained all the information about the event and how the Pride group started.

In June 27th, 1969, the Stonewall riots in New York City marked the beginning of the LGBTQ rights movements in the United States. Since then, many things have been evolved and now today, LGBTQ people can get married to each other. The month of June has been dedicated towards LGBTQ month as the riots finished in that month, every year this month is helped and dedicated to the LGBT people to recognise the impact that they have been through in the world.

During the talk with Sarah, I learnt many things about different lifestyles about the LGBTQ group. For example, I asked Sarah ‘how does being Bisexual work?’ to which Sarah brought a volunteer who grew up going to Monoux college. The woman was telling us about how she is a Bisexual, but it can be hard on her at times. For example, we learnt that being Bisexual does not mean you like the same gender but you are open to the opposite gender as well. But the woman spoke to us saying that she is still ‘in the closet’ which meant that she has not told her family about the situation due to personal or religious reasons.

From our point of views, we see LGBTQ people living their life, having fun yet we still don’t feel the impact they go through in their life. Many people have suffered and even till today they still are suffering due to the amount of bullying that has been going around during their life just because of the fact they like a different gender, etc. this has to be stopped because at the end of the day, they are still human, just like us and they feel the same way we feel.

From the research I had carried out from stonewall.com, one in five LGBTQ people have experienced hate crime due to the fact they have a different sexual orientation and/or gender identity in the last 12 months. Even though these are true facts, this is a couple years old which suggests if the situation has been better or worse.
