The Oscar nominations were released within the last week and as someone who adores films I was thrilled with the nominations. All the films that have been nominated for best picture are undeniably the best choices.
A shocking nomination is ‘Black Panther’, as a Marvel film it is the first ever to be nominated by the studio truly implementing how empowering and incredibly well made this film is. With it’s predominantly black casit is also an important nomination as it is allowing for such a groundbreaking film to get the recognition it deserves. This film is also in competition with films such as ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ which is also a shocking nomination for the negative reasoning of whether it should even be allowed to be nominated ,after viewing this film myself it is obvious that the picture as a whole is incredible especially focussing on the amazing cinematography and sound. These films will also rival films like ‘Blackkklansman’ and the notable “ A star is born”.’ A star is born’ has become one of the most popular nominations with audiences as it done a truly amazing job at the box office earning over 400 million dollars.
Despite these Hollywood made films ranging from Warner Bros to Universal Pictures an unlikely nomination “Roma” a Netflix made film has found a place in the Best Picture category. Is this the beginning of streaming services taking over? ‘Roma’ has gained 10 nominations this year at the Oscars and they have been earned as the incredible picture tells a story that pulls you in and carries you on a journey following a young women who is struggling. The nomination could result in multiple Netflix made productions being nominated next year and the years to come, with films such as ‘Birdbox’ being highly praised this year it is very likely that more nominations are coming.
Are streaming services going to become more valued? Over the last year Netflix originals having been getting more and more praise with its series capturing an audience it is unsurprising that they are finally starting to get recognition for the productions. Despite the high praise Netflix is receiving for some of its series it has had films and series that didn't sit as well with its audience such as ‘A Series Of Unfortunate Events’. So as it stands ‘Roma’ has a high chance of winning an award but is hard to determine with the Best Picture award.
