I believe homework is essential to students, being a student myself, as homework covers topics we have lightly touched in class in greater detail – there is only so much that can be covered in one hour! Essentially, the lesson time required to complete the whole curriculum is definitely not provided in school hours, so without homework, we undeniably will not be able to complete the required topics we should have covered. Some may argue that the curriculum is too long and should be shortened but if we shorten the curriculum, would school students be able to complete their studies in the time older students have? It will be impossible!

We could argue that homework is a waste of time and that it is eating up revision time for upcoming tests – does homework not refresh your memory and help with your revision anyway? I believe homework is a form of revision and it certainly helps me speed up my revision process! And even if the homework set is just extra research, you can learn a lot from it. For example, in some subjects, adding statistics awards you with more marks than just bluntly stating the facts so why not try to up your game a bit – this could be the game changer by bringing your score up a bit.

Homework may seem pointless if you insist on not putting any effort into it, if you ‘get help’ from the internet or get someone else to do it for you. The internet is wonderful – it provides access to millions of useful websites and the extra information you find could help you in lessons - you may understand the work more, or generally know more things about it, making you shine in an exam. If you get someone to do it for you, then you will not benefit from it. Your teacher can see you have done your homework in great detail and will assume you understand everything when in reality, you don’t understand a word. Homework is sometimes used as a device to assess your progress in subjects – if you get someone else to do work that you don’t understand, you will not get any help and it will affect your work in class.

Some may say that homework is unnecessary – children are already tired from six hours’ worth of studying and they need time to relax and have fun. However, homework is helpful in teaching and instilling time management into the students early. This means that students will grow up into efficient young adults and will keep on top of their things.
