On Thursday 24th January, students from Carshalton High School for Girls went on a trip to the Royal Ballet School in Covent Garden.

The day was grey but the girls were excited to learn about how ballet students go about their day, from their academics to their ballet training.

When arriving at the school, the girls watched 6 students, 2 from each year group show them their warm-ups and routines they do everyday to maintain things such as their posture and flexibility. The girls where stunned by their majestic 'allegro' and 'adagio' routines when on the bar, and by their perfect turns en pointe.

They also learnt about parts of ballet costume, specifically the infamous ballet point shoes. They learnt about the hard work and training in which the students have to go through to get to where they are and where they want to be.

After watching the dancers show their pas de deux routines, the girls went on a tour of the school. They watched a few ballet classes and walked on the bridge, which leads to the Royal Opera House.

One student said the “It was a moving and inspirational trip”. She “learned a lot and has motivated me to go and work on my own skills”. The girls thoroughly enjoyed the trip and took back some advice on things to do to improve their dance skills.
