On the 13th of December 2018, Swakeleys School for Girls presented their annual showcase; in which students ranging from Year 7 to Sixth Form were given a platform to showcase their talents and passion for the Performing Arts at Swakeleys.

I am happy to say that my friend and I performed a duet for the showcase; ‘’Prelude in C’’ by Bach; a duet consisting of piano and clarinet. Approximately 100 students from a wide range of age groups were present during the showcase; whether that was for the music, dance or drama department. Nevertheless, it would be true to say that hours after hours of long preparation, practice and commitment has been demonstrated from such students; we commend them for their efforts and hardwork. We also thank the parents and teachers who came and were a pleasant audience for the performances, upon interviewing an audience member, she told me: ‘It was very entertaining and well put together, I very much enjoyed the night’.

Through this, we can see that it is no doubt that this special night was enjoyed by all, however, such a night would not have been made possible if it was not for the hard work of various members of staff; especially the head of Performing Arts at Swakeleys; Mrs. Dennis, we give a special thank you to her. Furthermore, we thank other members of staff, such as Miss Coking and Miss Currell for supervising dance, Miss Swayne for Drama and, of course, Mrs. Dennis for Music. If it were not for these individuals, these performances and such a great and enjoyable night would not have been made possible.

It is of great importance that schools ensure that the Performing Arts is an aspect which plays a major role within their curriculum. The Performing Arts are all about self expression and embracing individuality, through this, students are able to build their self confidence. Through all this, students are able to go on to master many more essential skills that will equip them for life.

As Johann Sebastian Bach once said: ‘It is the special province of music to move the heart.’
