Yesterday late afternoon and evening both the Christmas choir of St James The Great RC Church, Petts Wood and the Ad hoc choir of St John’s United Reform Church, Orpington lead the congregation in their annual advent and carol services.

The advent service at St James’ Church was a serene and reflective occasion, with readings that retold the story of the nativity in between which the choir sang beautiful harmonised renditions of Silent Night, In the Bleak Midwinter and O Holy Night. At intervals, young children brought up the figures of the wise men, the Shepherds and the Holy Family to assemble the crib in front of the alter. As well as some quieter pieces, there were a couple of solos such as Father David’s ‘How Could it Be?’ and O Come, O Come Emmanuel and In Dulce Jubilio as part of the choir’s more jovial carols. After the service had ended, there was the opportunity to enjoy some mulled wine and minced pies in the community centre.

Similarly, at St John’s, the Carols by Candlelight service narrated the story of Jesus’ birth but also had short reflections after each song by the choir. While the choir chorused the likes of Angels’ Carol, Carol of the Bells and The Virgin Mary had a baby boy, the congregation were invited to join in the singing of Silent Night, O little town of Bethlehem and many more. To hear voices ringing out in unison was very warming (here and at St James’) because it felt as though there was an understanding of the joy of Christmas shared by all. Refreshments were served in the Morton hall and it was lovely to be able to socialise with other people. Together these services perfectly embodied the spirit of Christmas; uniting the communities in the joy of Jesus’ coming into the world and reminding everyone of the true meaning of this festive season. What better way to continue the preparations for Christmas!
