What is Diwali?

Diwali is the 'Festival of Lights' celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains. This bewildering festival is celebrated by lighting lamps and spending times with friends and families.

What is the story behind Diwali?

Diwali is a 5-day celebration and this year (2018) it was celebrated from 5/11/18 to 9/11/18. The first day is about how Ayurvedic medicine appeared in the world. However, the second day is about how the supreme personality of Godhead (Krishna) kills demon Narakasura and this shows goodness triumphs over evil. Day 3 is about how Lord Ram and Sita return to Ayodhya after being exiled for 14 years and how we welcome them back. Day 4 is the Govardhan Puja, moreover day 5 is Sisters day.

How Diwali was celebrated in the UK?

During Diwali, people arranged a festival in Mumbai Garden, Harrow and in this celebration, there was a lot of dancing i.e. Bollywood dancing, Bhangra dancing and Hip Hop dancing. With dancing, they provided 3-course meals. There was Fireworks Display in Brent which also included dancing, music, face painting, henna and international food. There were so many places where they celebrated Diwali this year i.e. WISTA, Devonshire Square, Cinnamon kitchen and etc.

How to celebrate Diwali?

Celebrating Diwali definitely requires happiness with your friends and family, however, to make this festival even sweeter people usually:

  • Go to the temple and pray.
  • Light deepa around their houses and temples.
  • Put rangoli.
  • Exchange sweets and gifts.
  • Wear new traditional clothes.
