On 21st September a new film came out on Netflix called ‘Nappily Ever After.’ Sana Lathan stars in this film alongside Lynn Whitfield and Ernie Hudson.

The film is set in America in Atlanta Georgia and it is a romantic comedy. It was directed by Haifaa al-Mansour. The films rating is a PG-13, so just the right age for girls who are growing into becoming women as they experience changes which can cause low self-esteem in some girls.

The plot revolves around a black woman called Violet (Sana Lathan). She has been raised by her mother to always be perfect for the man she is going to marry. The desire to get married and to be perfect is so deeply instilled in her by her mother (Lynn Whitfield), that she spends her life trying to be in control of every part of her life. She especially wants to control how she looks – she must look perfect and her hair must be straight.

The story then goes on to tell of a journey of self-love. The acting is good because Sana Latham cut her own hair which shows her passion and commitment. Overall it was an impressive movie, showing the power of self-love. This film challenges the beauty standards that are put on black women to have straight hair. I would recommend this movie to everyone, as it shows that is it more important to accept yourself as you are, rather than conform to what society wants you to be.
