Scenes from the video game Red Dead Redemption 2 have been removed from the YouTube platform after showing a suffragette being beaten and killed in many different ways.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is a western-themed game set at the end of the 19thcentury. This is about two decades before women were given the vote in all US states.

YouTube said the recordings had surpassed its rules on acceptable content.

One of the content creators involved had over 400,000 subscribers at the time and has had his channel terminated as a consequence.

There are comments to the videos where several users made jokes about the fact it was possible to assault a "feminist" in this way.

Some of videos that have been taken down have gained over millions of views.

The firm has taken down 8 out of the 10 clips that have extended their policies.

The deleted videos included the suffragette being beaten, shot at, fed to an alligator and dropped down mineshaft.

A video that still remains titled, "hog-tying feminist", shows the suffragette being caught with a lasso, pulled to the ground and her hands bound, but is not killed.

Despite this Red Dead Redemption 2 has attracted very positive reviews, and attained a score of 97 out of 100 on Metacritic and a 10/10 from IGN.

Many of the non-playable characters in this 18-certificate game can be attacked, however there has been criticism of the decision to allow suffragettes in the game to be vulnerable knowing the controversy this could attract.
