Orpington Amnesty groups connect you to human rights events. Activism is accessible to everyone and finding a local group allows you to learn about and participate in defending human rights.

As a feminist and someone who is eager to learn about and fight for human rights it’s easy to still often feel very detached from the real action, and as if protests, campaigns and events that support the things I believe in aren’t accessible to me. Therefore, I want to explore different movements of activism in the Orpington and Bromley area which we can easily take part in.

My friend Melissa Alvarez said: "I think it's incredibly important because it allows people to fight for what they believe in and cause a change in the world".

So to start with, a charity I feel very passionate about is Amnesty International. Whilst most of their campaigns focus on issues such as American Politics, global refugee crises and workers rights, many of the campaigns are still local. You can find groups for certain areas including a Bromley and Orpington group.

On October 7th they held a discussion on human rights in the UK, Europe and around the world, attended by Bob Neill MP for Bromley and Chislehurst. Bob has served on the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe’s Legal Affairs and Human Rights Committee and on the Committee, which appoints judges to the European Court of Human Rights.

He discussed human rights laws across the globe and spoke on recent cases. Most importantly they discussed how to get involved in activism and ways to learn more about it.

Having such a high profile and experienced person talk locally on such huge, global issues is an event that should be attended by so many more in our community, it was a free entrance and organized by a group of ordinary but passionate people too.

Make sure to research charity groups local to you and attend many more interesting events, having human rights is a necessity and we need to defend those who need us.
