Vote! By Preet Shirgill – (Guru Gobind Singh Khalsa College)

The 2018 Newham Mayor election is going to be held on Thursday the 3rd of May, after 23 years of Sir Robin Wales securing this honourable and influential position. The potential Mayor will then run the Newham Council for the next four years. It is extremely important that those who are liable to vote – do! This will give your voice a chance to be heard as you may depend on a certain party to help bring the change you agree with. This is only possible when you take the simple initiative to poll. I had questioned a few people to ask if they were going to vote and to my surprise one Lady had replied, “I don’t have to bother; so many people go to vote an extra vote will not make a difference”. One vote holds much significance it can turn tables instantly, making sure the worthy party is elected to make decisions on issues that affect all local residents. These may be relating to: local environment, schools and libraries. In spite of who wins many people merely wish for the ‘Newham body to be redirected in perhaps a very different way and try to be more vigilant and attentive of problems before they wreak havoc and chaos. There are 128 polling stations dispersed throughout Newham, so it is almost guaranteed there is one near you. You may receive or may already have received you polling card to tell you where and when the elections may occur so go and VOTE!
