What was once known as Mitcham Fair Green has now transformed into Mitcham Upper Green. After three years of a multi-million project, Mitcham has transformed. As Rose would describe it, Mitcham was transformed from being an ‘urban ditch’ to being what many locals and I might call it a masterpiece. Mitcham town centre used to be just a town centre, with a widespread space for people to walk around in. However now, Mitcham town centre is not just a town centre but a community-friendly environment which had been re-designed to become more open and appealing to the residents as well as the local people.  Mitcham Council states, ‘it is a town centre improvement and regeneration project which aims to halt the decline of Mitcham’. It is now safer, as well as more welcoming as it is more open to view by pedestrians whether from buses or the main road.

As well as this, there is now an improved transport system, as there are now new bus stops that are allocated through the town centre. This has reduced traffic, as buses and cars previously only had a one way system to go around. Now, buses go through the town centre to get to their destinations whilst cars drive through the normal route. Maria, a resident says, ‘Having spent years sitting in traffic things are finally moving forward, I now worry less about being late to school.’  The Upper Green is on the up!
