Mr Gagan Mohindra is the current Conservative Party MP for the South of Hertfordshire.

He has continuously been an MP since the 12th of December 2019 and currently has the role of Shadow Minister (Education).

I have been lucky enough to have the opportunity to interview Mr Gagan Mohindra to see his inspirations to take this career path, future plans and how he works towards improving the Education system and environment.

What inspired you to join politics?

When asked what sparked the initial interest to join the political workforce, Mr Mohindra expressed that “it was instilled in me from a young age to give back to society”.

As well as this, he stated that “if you had a said to me when I was a teenager that I would one day be a politician, let alone a Member of Parliament, I would have laughed out loud.”

This shows that he’s always wanted to give back and he found the perfect way of doing this by becoming an MP.

Did you have a favourite subject in school?

During school life, Mr Mohindra stated that “I enjoyed languages as though I struggled with them, I sought the challenge”.

This shows his determined attitude towards challenges.

What are you doing to improve the quality of education?

When asked what Mr Mohindra is doing to improve the quality of education, he said “One area that needs more resources in our education system is Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).”

As well as this he has assured us that ” I’ve also asked the Secretary of State for Education to ensure that mental health support teams, that were introduced in schools following the impact of the pandemic, continue to be available for students who need them.”

I  believe that this is a great idea to encourage students to speak to people if they feel worried.

What steps do you plan to take to prepare students for jobs in technology and innovation?

I asked what he plans on doing to help students prepare for jobs involving technology and innovation, as this is the driving force of business transformation, he replied with “I’ve been speaking with businesses, such as Airbus, about the importance of preparing students for the jobs of tomorrow, particularly in STEM fields.”

This benefits students as they can have more information about what jobs in technology and innovation look like.

What are your opinions on students using AI for assistance in school?

I asked for his opinions on the controversial use of AI during school, Mr Mohindra explained how “It’s a tool that should supplement learning, not replace it.”

He also said “They need to fully understand material rather than using AI as a shortcut “ this is important because sometimes students don’t understand the disadvantages of using technology to completely write school tasks.

What are you doing to improve the environment?

Finally, I asked what Mr Mohindra aims to do to improve the environment, he replied by saying “One area that I’m focused on is improving the health of our rivers and chalk streams, which are vital to our local environment.”

He also spoke about how flooding is impacting our communities here when he said “ Flooding has a significant impact on our communities, and I’m committed to enhancing our infrastructure to prevent future incidents.”

To tackle this problem he has taken a step by having meetings with “Thames Water, Ofwat, and local groups to address issues like sewage discharge in the River Chess and manage the impact of new housing developments.”

In conclusion, I am very grateful to have this chance to interview Mr Gagan Mohindra and learn more about his future plans.
