At the end of Ramadan, muslims across the world come together to celebrate the religious holiday of Eid. This year, Eid began last Wednesday on the 10th April 2024. More specifically, it is known as "Eid-ul-Fitr", meaning "Holiday of breaking the fast." It begins on the first day of Shawwal on the Arabic calendar, on the night of sighting the crescent moon.
Eid is a very special day for many muslims, as it is viewed as a day signifying the accomplishment of fasting and engaging in a greater level of acts of worship for muslims during the month of Ramadan. Muslims in all corners of the world would set up lights, meet up with family, exchange gifts and celebrate this holy day. Typically before Eid day, a mandatory specific charity called Zakat-ul-Fitr is given any time before Eid day by families, to ensure the muslims in need can enjoy their Eid as well.
A typical Eid day would consist on wearing your best clothes, attending the morning Eid prayer service, which is a community wide prayer held at a local mosque, then going back home with family to exchange gifts and enjoy meals together. From there it is one's own choosing of how they would like to spend their Eid day, whether it be relaxing at home or going out to celebrate with friends.
Eid has great significance to muslims as it marks the accomplishment of fulfilling an important obligation in the islamic calendar, and is a time of enjoyment and happiness for muslims.
