A much improved Welling United performance yielded a well deserved point at Concord Rangers.

Three days earlier, the Wings had put in a dismal performance at home to Chelmsford, especially in the second half, but they bounced back well at Thames Road.

Rowan Liburd headed wide from Nathan Green’s cross as the game started at a high tempo then Lyle Della-Verde had a shot turned over after the opportunity was created by Ben Ward-Cochrane.

Ward-Cochrane had a shot deflected straight into the arms of Chris Haigh and the Concord goalkeeper was called into action again when making a good save from Green.

Charlee Hughes failed to hit the target for the hosts then Aron Pollock headed over. Reise Charles-Cook pushed away Jack Bridge’s shot and Ryan Blackman cleaned up before both clubs had a player cautioned in quick succession.

Frazer Shaw made a good block from a Liburd drive after he had chested down well then Ward-Cochrane drew another good save out of Haigh.

End to end football continued and both teams then had big shouts for penalties turned down, the hosts for a foul and Welling for a clear handball, but it was Concord who had the last chance of the first half when Lamar Reynolds’ shot appeared destined for the top corner but Charles-Cook dived to make an excellent save.

Three second half minutes had passed when the deadlock was broken. Alex Wall was deemed to have been brought down just inside the penalty area and he took the responsibility himself when rifling into the bottom corner from the spot.

Any thoughts that Welling might crumble were proved unfounded when they levelled three minutes later. Lyle-Verde, making his second Welling debut, strode forward before letting fly from twenty-five yards with an unstoppable drive.

Ayo Tanimowo drove in a fierce cross that Liburd met with a diving header but it bulleted wide of the near post then, at the other end, Ryan Scott met a corner but headed wide.

As the game drew to a close, Concord had a great chance to claim all three points when a long shot fell kindly into the path of Sam Blackman but he lashed over from close range.

Had that gone in, it would have been harsh on the Wings who were good value for a share of the spoils.
