Runners, families and children basked in the May sunshine as they took part in one of Brentford’s biggest sporting events at Syon Park last Sunday.

Organised in partnership with Brentford Lock West, Brentford SportsFEST included a 10k, 5k and 3k race along with a 5k Walk and Talk (in association with West London NHS Trust) aimed at raising awareness of mental health.

The event also offered a special heart screening in partnership with the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY).

The screening was established in memory of Brentford FC Sporting Director Robert Rowan, whose life was tragically cut short in November 2018 when he suffered a fatal cardiomyopathy episode at only 28 years of age.

Robert’s wife, Suzanne, attended the event and highlighted the importance of the heart screenings for people aged 14-35.

“I can’t think of a more fitting tribute to Rob than today’s event, which brought together Brentford FC, its Community Sports Trust and the charity CRY," Suzanne said.

“Along with nearly 100 people benefitting from the heart screening, we have also helped raise awareness of cardiac risk amongst young people at a local level.”

Formerly known as the Brentford Challenge, Brentford SportsFEST was rebranded to promote a more inclusive approach to getting active. A number of school children took part in an exciting football tournament and the event held its first 3k for adults who are just starting to get fit.

Pete Gregorowski, who won the 10k race, said:

“The course was fantastic – it was great to run in parts of Syon Park usually closed to the public.

“As a Brentford fan and someone who lives locally, I think it is really important to highlight the positive impact football clubs can have on the local community and how it can bring people together from all backgrounds.”

Now in its seventh consecutive year, the event aims to bring sport to the heart of the local community.

James Stockdale, Development Manager at Brentford Lock West, said:

“The weekend saw yet another great event hosted by Brentford FC Community Sports Trust. This year’s SportsFEST offered so many opportunities for local people to come along and get active, while highlighting the superb facilities on offer in and around Brentford. There is always a really positive atmosphere on the day and it was fantastic to see so many of our residents from Brentford Lock West taking part.

The paddleboarding and kayaking, which took place on the canal in front of our sales suite, looked great fun and it was nice to see so many people out enjoying the water. We are honoured to be continuing to sponsor such an important local event.”
