Epsom & Ewell Harriers senior athletes started the season with an excellent victory in a tight opening fixture in Division 2 West of the Southern Athletics League at Tooting Bec.

On a bright but chilly day, South London Harriers started strongly and held a narrow lead for much of the day. However, the turning point in the competition was the women’s 2000m steeplechase where a double victory, with Issy Stockley winning the A string and Katie’s Hartgrove taking the B string, secured 8 points for Epsom & Ewell to put them into a late lead.

Earlier, Di Norman had claimed shot put victory with 11m 55 and Daniel Roffey took the win in the high jump with 1m 86. Daniel also leapt 6m 27 for long jump victory as Jason Brown won the B string with 5m 79. There were further double victories in the 800m (Lily Pearson and Ella Witts), the 100m hurdles (Adahna Ekoku and Amy Catcheside), the high jump (Di Norman and Katie Hartgrove), long jump (Adahna Ekoku and Aesha Ayimba) and triple jump (Aesha Ayimba and Lily Pearson).

With strong performances by both the men and the women to finish runners-up in the 4x100m and 4x400m relays, Epsom & Ewell Harriers secured the win with 189 points, just ahead of South London Harriers (183 points) and Aldershot, Farnham & District (177 points), with St Albans Striders finishing fourth (111 points).
