An investigation has been launched after a Sutton United midfielder was allegedly spat at in his face following a league match in east London.

Nicky Bailey claims he went into the club bar at Leyton Orient, in Brisbane Road, before he became involved in a dispute with some opposition supporters.

The 34-year-old then says one of them spat at him in his face.

In a Twitter post, he wrote: “So went into the Leyton Orient bar after the game and their vile trampy fans started on three of us coz [sic] we beat them.

“Then one horrible tramp spat in my face, proper scumbag supporters. Hope you’re proud of yourselves.”

Downthread, people replied to the tweet he posted as some asked why he visited the opposition team’s bar.

Others questioned whether the incident really happened.

One person claims he was next to the former Charlton Athletic and Millwall midfielder at the time of the incident.

Robert Szalai said: “I’m not Orient, I was right next to you, now speak the truth. No one spat, although beer was thrown. However, you did mouth off to everyone in there.”

Bailey denied this, saying he went into the same bar last season when Sutton United were defeated 4-1 and “had no trouble at all”.

A Leyton Orient spokesman said: “The club will be conducting its own investigation into allegations made online by an opposition player following the full-time whistle today.

“The club will not be making a further comment at this time.”

A Sutton United spokesman said the club is aware of the incident and have offered any assistance which is needed while the investigation remains ongoing.

Sutton United ended Leyton Orient’s 13-match unbeaten run in the Vanarama National League as Jonah Ayunga scored his first goal for the Us.

He hit a low shot into the bottom-left corner of the net early into the second-half for what turned out to be the only strike in the 1-0 victory on September 29.
