Sean Maitland’s trophy-winning experience will be to Scotland’s benefit when the Rugby World Cup comes around, according to centre Huw Jones.

The Saracens winger has lifted the Premiership and European Champions Cup since joining the club in 2016.

Maitland has nine tries in his 35 appearances in a Scotland jersey, and Glasgow Warriors centre Jones believes his nose for the line could be crucial at the tournament in Japan later this year.

“Sean is a great guy with a lot of experience, having started out in Super Rugby with the Crusaders,” Jones said, speaking at a Land Rover event where three youngsters were chosen to fly to Japan and be Land Rover mascots during Rugby World Cup 2019.

“He has been at Saracens for a while and won a lot of silverware. He knows about winning.

“There have been some tight games recently where he has been the difference and scored the try to win it for us – if he can do a bit more of that at the World Cup that would be fantastic.”

Maitland will be looking to finish the season on a high as Saracens chase silverware domestically and in Europe.

And Jones, 25, is backing him to shine before he is set to take to the field in their World Cup opener against Ireland.

The Glasgow centre is hoping to line up alongside the Saracens man, who he enjoys playing with.

“Sean is a shoo-in for the Scotland team when he is fit so he will be a big part of our World Cup squad,” Jones added

“As a No.13 I’m next to him most of the time. He is always in my ear telling me what to do in and in attack he is always wanting the ball.

“He is brilliant to play with. Sean is a clever player, he’s big and deceptively quick.

“For a winger with that kind of rugby brain makes him better than most. Defensively and in attack he is a joy to play with.”
