Waltham Forest Amateur Boxing Club (ABC) secured two national champions on Sunday.

At the finals, held at Hayes Working Men’s Club, two of the club’s brightest teenage talents, Keith Witter, 16, and Ben Taylor, 17, were in action for the Highams Park-based club.

Witter, boxing in the Class A U-66k division, was up against Oscar Kusmirek of Finchley, who he had defeated in a unanimous points victory back in February.

Kusmirek was fired up and looking for revenge, but Witter rode the pressure well in the first round before stepping it up in the second and landing some good combinations on his opponent.

The Forest boxer implemented his superior skills further in the third, with a sequence of strong combinations securing him another unanimous points decision.

Taylor, who turned 17 on Saturday, was up against Eltham’s Vinnie French-Gibbons in the Class B U70k final.

French-Gibbons had the better of the first round, but Taylor boxed well of his back foot and landed some telling straight jabs and combinations.

A similar story transpired in the second and Taylor finished the third strongly too to deservedly take a unanimous decision from the officials.

On the success, club secretary Ian Cuddy said: “To get one national winner is great, but to get two on the same day is brilliant.

“I’m so pleased with both lads and their coaches, who have all worked really hard in the gym to make this happen.”
